Graphing Real Estate Finance and Analysis Data with Excel: ULI Live Online Workshop

Held over two sessions, this new online program will instruct attendees in the skills required to better display quantitative data using Microsoft Excel. It will focus on the tools provided in Excel, with specific emphasis placed on commonly used graphics for financial reporting and analysis and particular attention paid to real estate uses.

The first session will familiarize participants with Excel graphing tools, demonstrating line and bar charts, and will include axes formatting, data labels, secondary y-axis, and formatting of graphs. Session 2 will demonstrate the full range of the graphic options available in MS Excel. Advanced chart types, such as contour, bubble, and radar, will be covered and their relative strengths and weaknesses demonstrated.

The data used for the course will be real estate–specific. Participants will be provided with a data set for hands-on use in the second session. At the conclusion of the program, participants will understand how to graph data using multiple chart types and how to construct customized data labels. Attendees will receive a set a completed graphs and corresponding data at the conclusion of the program to facilitate ongoing review and understanding of the lessons.

Instructor


Roger Staiger is managing director for Stage Capital LLC, an international real estate advisory firm providing expertise to clients in the areas of global portfolio management and asset repositioning. Staiger, through Stage Capital, has successfully repositioned over $600 million in distressed and inefficient real estate projects globally.

During his 20-year career, Staiger has worked in a number of industries at senior levels. He was managing director for Constellation Energy’s retail commodity division, CFO for America's Best Builder 2006, and a portfolio manager for a large commingled pension fund in New York.

Staiger holds multiple degrees, including a BS in electrical engineering, an MBA in investments, an MA in international transactions, and an MS in finance. He currently holds faculty positions at Johns Hopkins University, George Washington University, Georgetown University, and Homburg Academy, based in Switzerland.

Staiger makes numerous capital market and economic presentations to organizations internationally. He also appears regularly on television and is often quoted in national periodicals and local newspapers.  His first textbook, Real Estate: Asset Repositioning, is scheduled for publication in the fourth quarter of 2013 by Oxford University Press.
